2025 Excellence in Construction Award winning KC Zoo Lion Enclosure by APCO
This project was a complete renovation of the African Kopje exhibit at the Kansas City Zoo. The area is home to the Zoo’s lions, small cats, fox and caracal. The project included new enclosures for the fox and small cat residents and
a brand-new lion indoor viewing area that was expanded by 30%.
Our scope included new bird-safe glass railing at all small cat and caracal enclosures, automatic sliding doors with arched top transoms, storefront openings, and specialty laminated lion viewing glass.
The lion viewing glass, which separates visitors from the lion’s outdoor enclosure, weighs up to 900 pounds and was specially engineered to ensure public safety.
